The Tucunaré-açu or Cichla temensis is the species of fish most sought after by sport fishing practitioners in the Amazon, being considered by many to be a true trophy.

This inhabitant of the Amazonian Rivers is known for his aggressive behavior, since it triggers violent attacks on baits, which attracts tourists from all over the world to practice sport fishing in our state. Last year, according to SEMA – State Secretariat for the Environment of Amazonas, this activity registered the visit of around 1,500 fishing tourists in the Rat Uatumã area (located 227 kilometers from Manaus).

The trophy fish, as it is known, has a diurnal habit, diversifying its feeding places. The diet consists of consuming other species of fish and also invertebrates, such as crustaceans and insects. In general, peacocks are sedentary and have a good visual orientation, which facilitates the search for their prey. They can reach 13 kg and more than a meter in length. At least 16 species of peacock bass are known.
The Amazon region has a great prominence in the Brazilian sport fishing scene, due to the abundance of tucunaré-açu, mainly in the basins of the black water rivers (KULLANDER, 2003). Most of the municipalities in Amazonas have great potential for the activity, but the main exploration site is located in the north of the State of Amazonas, in the municipalities of Barcelos and Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, regions of the middle Rio Negro and its tributaries, the Jurubaxi, Acará, Demeni, Cuini, Caurés, Padauari, Unini and Abacaxis rivers stand out. In these rivers we can find our largest specimens of the Açu species.

However, fishing in the Amazon is not limited to peacocks, however, this is the species most sought after by sporting fishermen. Other options are also included in this list, for example, Aruanã, Apapá, Traira, Piraíba, Cachara, Pirarara.
