Cultural Exchange
The indigenous communities contribute to the tourist development of the region. In Manaus we have the example of the Cipiá Indigenous Community and the Dessana Tukana Indigenous Community, located in the Tupé Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), in the rural area of the municipality of Manaus, on the left bank of the Negro River, approximately 25 km in a straight line from the city center.
The community receives tourists with handmade instruments, songs, dances and rituals, besides telling about their history, customs and costumes. Originally the ritual presented lasts 24 hours, but they only present a quick sample of their culture. The community presents the handicraft they produce which is also their source of income, and finally, they invite tourists to taste some typical snacks of their culture.
River communities
Those who know the Amazon from Manaus, either in the surroundings or on the traditional routes along the Solimões and Amazonas rivers, are impressed by the scenery found in the regions of the Middle and Upper Rio Negro, one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the Amazon.
Between the cities of Santa Isabel and São Gabriel da Cachoeira, north of the State of Amazonas, there is an Amazon that is still sparsely inhabited and unaffected by urbanization. In these places, the “Community Based Tourism” gains more and more strength as an alternative to valorize the standing forest, besides being a source of sustainable income for riverside families.
Community tourism brings opportunities for coexistence and cultural exchange. Eating fish with your hands, tucumã at breakfast, manioc flour in the pirão or taking a river bath with riverside people from the Amazon are some of the experiences that the tourist can experience with the natives in the forest.
