The Jaú National Park is a conservation reserve located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest and intended for scientific, cultural, educational and recreational purposes. Located in the municipalities of Novo Airão and Barcelos, in the middle Rio Negro, it has 2.3 million hectares and preserves the Jaú River basin. Currently, its administration is in charge of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
The Park has a geological historical record of about 500 million years and the most recent is 6 million years. It is also considered the oldest place of indigenous colonization in Amazonas, where there are many paintings and inscriptions on stones called petroglyphs.
For tourist attractions it is important to note that there are two very different natural scenarios, during periods of drought and flooding of rivers. In the period from March to July it is possible to make excursions in the igapó forest, in the periods from August to September it is possible to identify the waterfalls, petroglyphs and beaches.

The visit to the Park is a return to the prehistoric period. The only park that preserves an entire basin of a river with clean black waters. The most visited attractions are the Carabinani River, the Itaubal Trail and the Petroglyphs. The climate is typical of tropical forests and the rainiest period from December to April is the least suitable for visits.

The protection area was the first preservation area with planning and management, starting with Decree No. 85,200, of February 24, 1980. The site concentrates a large load of material wealth such as rock paintings, waterfalls, trails, being recognized with two titles: the Natural Heritage Site and the Biosphere Reserve.
The Jaú National Park has areas of forest that are still very pure, where there are thousands of species of mammals and birds that have not yet been scientifically cataloged. The prohibition of hunting on the spot should be highlighted.
