Andiroba, jatobá and seringueira are some of the species of the floodplain.
The forest of the igapó is in lower areas and, unlike the forest of várzea, which suffers flooding periodically, the igapó suffers permanent flooding. The plants present different strategies and adaptations. Examples of species in the igapó are the buritis, bromeliads, orchids and the famous vitoria regia.
Finally, the terra firme forest is found in most of the Amazon forest and does not suffer flooding because it is located in higher areas. The vegetation is formed of species of larger size, like the chestnut tree.
Besides storing carbon, the forests regulate the climate. The forests are home to much of the planet’s biodiversity, many of which are still unknown to science.
